What is Chemistry? Chemistry is the study of substances, what they are made of, how they interact and what role they play in living things.
From the moment you are born and throughout the whole of your life you are surrounded by chemistry; in the air you breathe, the food you eat and the clothes you wear. From space research to the depths of the oceans, chemists are involved in collecting valuable information that helps us to have a better understanding of the world we live in.
Why study Chemistry?
It’s fun!
It’s a hands-on practical based course developing skills of enquiry, communication and numeracy.
It’s exciting and intellectually stimulating.
Chemistry is listed as a preferred subject for more degree courses than any other subject. Medicine, dentistry, zoology, veterinary science, food science and many more actually require chemistry.
A chemistry A-level can also serve as a passport to many non-scientific careers such as accountancy and law, as it is valued across a wide range of professions.
Using Chemistry you could end up:
• making medicines that fight cancer or heart disease
• investigating the chemicals in cosmetics
• making a new plastic for sports shoes
• measuring the alcohol content of drinks
• protecting the environment for future generations.
