1-5 MARCH 2010 World Book Week Lots of exciting activities took place including a photo competition of staff with their favourite book (faces not included!). Students had to guess the name of the member of staff. Also storytelling each lunch time in the Learning Centre with a book-themed quiz at break time and staff dressed up as their favourite book character on World Book Day.
27 FEBRUARY 2010 Emily in Year 10 has won the Banbury round of the Rotary Club Young Chef competition. She goes forward to the quarter finals of this national competition. Good Luck Emily!
Influential Head and students
Dr Fiona Hammans attended the '100 Group' Forum as one of 100 influential Heads, from both state and independent schools, who meet to consider ways of working together to improve the quality of education across our country. Prominent speakers included Vince Cable MP and Michael Gove MP (Photo right).
Dr Hammans was accompanied by two of our Sixth Form students who, as well as taking part in the Question Time forum, were taken to the London 2012 Olympic site by former Olympians Daley Thompson and Tessa Sanderson. This was a wonderful opportunity for these students to participate at the highest level and to share their insights with their fellow students when back in school.
Fundraising for Camps International We have nine students, from Years 11 and 13, currently raising money for a 4 week expedition to do voluntary work in Kenya. So far they have organised a quiz night, cake sales, selling refreshments at school events and providing a car washing service (kindly sponsored by Halfords of Banbury). Read more...
9 FEBRUARY: Cricket for GIRLS! Charlotte Edwards, the England Women’s Cricket captain, came to Banbury School to coach cricket to girls.
They enjoyed world class tuition and learnt a wide variety of skills.
Science teacher, Ellie Foster, is taking part in a Comenius Project. This project means that the school has been awarded 17,000 euros from the British Council in order to take staff and students to Germany, Spain and Norway and to engage students from these countries at Banbury School.
The project aims to increase awareness of sustainability and to encourage students and staff to change their behaviours to improve sustainability within Europe. Students will work with other schools across Europe gaining valuable knowledge of the diversity of languages, culture, and sustainable practices. Students will acquire skills for their personal development to lead more sustainable lives and also for future employment as European citizens. Visit the Banbury School Comenius blog
4 FEBRUARY:Music Recital. Students took part in Practice-a-thon Music, which is a unique fundraising event to help children with cancer. They asked people to sponsor them; commiting to a number of hours of practising for this music recitial. Money raised will go to CLIC Sargent.
2 FEBRUARY: Creative Learning Day 3 explored the theme of the Wider World. Ten members of the local business community took part in a 'What's my line' event; students had to guess their job and were able to find out about future careers. Notebooks from Norbar

All AS/A2 Maths students sat the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge.Special congratulations to our students who excelled in the competition: Greg, Y13 and Michael, Y12 achieved silver certificates and Paul, Josh, Adam (Y13); Laura (Y12); Joe and Ben (Y11) gained bronze certificates. Laura said "It was really enjoyable although very challenging. It's great for maths students to be recognised as they rarely are."
Hampers for the Elderly
Banbury School (in collaboration with Age Concern Oxford and Banbury Round Table) collected items for hampers which were delivered to local older people who might have been alone this Christmas. Read more...
16 DECEMBER2009 Carols by Candle light in the new dining hall was wonderful. Mince pies and mulled wine along with bell ringers and choirs made this a joyous occasion. Members of the local community joined staff and students to celebrate this festive event. Proceeds of the collection will go to Shelter and Age Concern.

27 NOVEMBER 2009 Banbury School Trust sponsors primary school children to experience university life
Gifted and Talented pupils in year 5 and 6 from our partnership primary schools spent a day with undergraduates at Keble College, Oxford. Graham Whiting, Chair of the Banbury School Trust said “Recent research from Professor Paul Croll* states that 'Children as young as 12 have a strong sense of their personal futures and can reflect thoughtfully on what life might hold for them'. The Trust wants to help Banbury’s young children aspire to great achievements and provide them with the opportunity to achieve their aspirations.”

20 NOVEMBER 2009 The PPE Faculty ran a Gifted and Talented day for our family of primary schools. 42 children from Year 6 were involved in the day's activities, some of which were led by our Year 11 Gifted and Talented students.

Cherwell District Council have inspected our catering areas at the school. Michelle and her team have been given four stars and rated as 'very good'. This is a great achievement and a well deserved award; reflecting all their efforts and hard work to improve the service and food offered.

The guest speaker, Jenny Celerier, gave the low-down on The Apprentice as it really is and also had some great business tips from her new venture. Science shoots for the stars
The Science Faculty partnered with Dr Matthew Lodge, Senior Research Fellow at Oxford University and Governor of Banbury School, has successfully obtained a grant of £2,850 from The Royal College of Science to run a 'Shoot a space shuttle by candlelight' project. Students from Year 8, 10 and 12 will be involved in this exciting venture.

14 SEPTEMBER 2009: Emma Thorpe in Year 10 was runner up in the Darwin Award to design a sculpture to stand permanently outside Oxford’s University Museum of Natural History. Emma received a certificate marking her contribution and her final design mounted and framed.
