For each Key Stage and for each subject
the National Curriculum is made up of
two areas:
1. The Programmes of Study
The Programmes of Study provide the
basis for teachers planning and schemes
of work and identify what students should
be taught.
2. Attainment Targets (ATs)
and Level Descriptors
These set out expected standards of
performance. An Attainment Target sets
out the knowledge and skills students
are expected to have by the end of each
Key Stage. Each Attainment Target consists
of eight levels and these provide teachers
with the basis for making judgements
about a student’s performance.
