Gifted and Talented Students

All students deserve both support and challenge in their learning. At Banbury School we aim to provide this through our formal curriculum and more widely. We recognise students with particular gifts and talents, and provide an extensive range of additional and extending activities for them. The following are examples of programmes and events in the 08/09 school year, many of which will continue in this academic year:

  • After-school Classical Greek taught by Oxford University graduate student
  • Year 8 residential visit to Wales to develop leadership skills
  • Regional to international sports representation from golf to rugby, cricket to gymnastics
  • Entry to the UK Mathematics Trust Awards, earning Gold, Silver and Bronze awards for Sixth Form students
  • Coaching training to support talented sports men and women, to work with other students and pupils
  • Linguists at KS4 taking part in a Business Language Day based at Vodafone
  • Music GCSE run after school for musicians to extend their GCSE subjects
  • A weekly Chess Club with the best students representing the South East in the Terrafinals
  • Celebrating National Science Week Year 10s visit Imperial College to hear the Big Bang. Year 8s study the evolution of dinosaurs at Oxford University
  • Students with best Science results from KS3 all do triple Science – Biology, Chemistry, Physics – for GCSE
  • Sixth Form mathematicians provided with adult mentor from Oxford University
  • Early Entry for English and Maths GCSE for most able, at the end of Year 10
  • AS course taken in Year 11 for early entered GCSE students
  • Extended Projects at Level 2 taken in Year 10 and Level 3 in the Sixth Form
  • Most able English students attend ‘Poetry Live’ in Oxford
  • Year 7 English students visit a local radio station to take part in a competition to design an advertising jingle
  • Gifted and Talented Week, where 40 of our most able students were ‘off timetable’ for a week following a special enrich and extend programme across faculties
  • Junior and Community Sports Leaders Awards at KS4 and Sixth Form
  • Aiming for the Top group in the Sixth Form, focussing on application to Russell Group universities, including Oxford and Cambridge
  • Duke of Edinburgh Award
  • Visiting Dance and Choir – Young Zulu Warriors – work with gifted and talented sports and music students
  • Membership of Oxfordshire Youth Orchestra
  • Grant from Royal Society of Chemistry (£2250) to “shoot a shuttle into space” for able scientists in Years 8, 10 and 12.
